vue - Allotment Dairy : Growing potatoes in containers, how to boost your yield to get a bumper crop
A quick video of how I go about planting potatoes in containers and then taking up a little soil space on the bed the roots are allowed to grow through the holes into the soil beneath. This is how I did it last year and had some amazing crops of 11 pounds of spuds from just 2 seed potatoes. I use 30 litre pots and add about 4oz of fertilizer to the bottom quarter such as Blood Fish & Bone or whatever your fert of choice is. The amount of room each pot takes up is minimal, around 2square feet so the yield per sq ft is remarkable, way more than planting straight into the soil. The reason seems to be that not only do the plants get all the nutrients from the compost, but also they get extra nutrients and moisture from the soil below. I know the compost costs a little but the ease of harvest cancels out the extra expense and the hassle of digging up the crop. +allotmentdiary Thanks for the video! I'm going on 5yrs for container gardening. I live in an apartment and have been adding a few containers each year. We are allowed to put in raised beds here, but I like the idea of putting the containers in a raised bed, so if I ever do move, I won't be leaving all of my soil behind. So far, I've only had my containers in the flower beds. One tip I'd like to share. Here where I live, gardeners cut the seed potatoes so as to get more seed out of each potato. Cut the potato into sections leaving a "seed" on each part. You might get 6 seeds from one potato, then plant the seed side up. Lettuces and green onion I grow in smaller pots. I grow 2 tomato plants in one big poly pot. I'm still learning as I go too, so all of these videos with tips on container gardening sure help!

The great productivity probably comes from growing in pure compost. How much does that cost?

Great videos cheers, they have really helped me on my first time growing potatoes in pots, and touch wood so far they are going well. I would however like to see a video of how you "earth up your pots", each time I do it I am braking the potato plants. Is it just a case of being more gentle or is their a technique you would recommend.

Doing this now. Using old containers that got for free with holes in. Wondered why you didn't fill soil to top of pot though. Thought you'd get better yield that way.
