vue - Allotment Diary : Planting the Giant Carrots in the Polytunnel
Planting out this years Giant Carrots.These are planted out into the polytunnel in a deep bed of soil surrounded by compost with additional fertilizers added and mycorrhizal fungi to the roots to hopefully produge a huge specimen in September if they keep growing well.. These have been grown in deep tubes since February to give them enough time to grow large. The variety is New Red Intermediate which is the same carrot I grow for the long show classes but will grow really big in the right conditions. Happy Gardening. Hey Dan it's your friend from New Mexico here and I was just wondering 1) can you actually eat the beautiful vegetables you grow and 2) if you do eat them do you ever worry about growing them in plastic potting containers? 3) how do the giant vegetables taste. Hi Dan, Thanks for making this video. What is the additional fertilizer that you added? It definitely sounds like your polytunnel is going to blow away at any moment!
Today, I followed the example that you showed where you grow the carrot in a tube of compost in a grow bin of sand. My soil here is quite sandy and last year I prepped it by adding compost and vermiculite and letting it sit over the winter. I dug out the 4x4 bed onto a tarp and then I sifted it all back into the bed making sure to eliminate any obstacles for the carrots. What else should I add to the bed before I plant the carrots? -
Wow, those are some massive carrots. Do they taste any good or are they more alike their large rooted cousins? Do they make for a good ingredient in recipes or are they bland due to their size?
