vue - Allotment Diary : Preparing this years Giant Onion Growing Mixture
Time to prepare the growing media for this years giant onions. These will be grown in 60 litre pots so I need to prepare about 360 litres in order to plant just 6 out. I'm using the same as last year which consists of 2parts Jacks Magic 1 part John innes no2 and a little perlite. The only fertiliser I add is 2 oz of 6 month slow release Gro Sure fertiliser. Other additions are 4 oz Nutrimate to add extra humus, 4 oz Calcified Seaweed for trace elements and to add a bit of lime, 1 oz Dolomite lime for extra magnesium and a handful of Rockdust. All mixed thoroughly in the cement mixer and that's it.

Been doing some research Dan , You want a high nitrogen fertiliser as each ring on an onion is actually a leaf formation . Give it a go , you may pass the 10lb mark .

Hi Dan. Firstly, love your videos. This year i will be attempting to grow my own giant onions. I have purchased my seeds from Robinsons nursery, who sell their own "Mammoth Onion" variety, not sure if you have heard from them? Please could you tell me where you get those black pots from with the handles on please?

I went down the allotment this morning, and noticed that some of the garlic that I'd forgotten last year have started to shoot up and grow. I'll leave them and see how they get on. I hope your onions grow well.

Glad to see you useing rockdust I have been useing it for over 30 years now you will see the benefits if you use enough and test here in Germany have shown they get 30% more inthe first year and it holds on for three years so if you use it every year your veggies just get better and better .Good luck this year with your onions

You are very trusting giving out your tips....... hold a few secrets back from the competition...... I have to admit that muck looks lovely and friable. Lucky onions I say....

Thanks Dan
It's a bit like a chemistry lesson, you should be wearing a white coat and rubber gloves, it's not cheap this onion growing it must have set-u-back a few quid, it's a big job this exhibition growing and a lot of work and dedication that goes into it. -
I'm going to put my spring onions in a 100 litre tub each.

Love these professional touch vids Dan, it will be a few seasons before I get this far but I`m keeping up with all you shows. I`m going for large onions and container spuds.. and carrots etc, so you have a pupil in Cheshire. Thanks for all the great know-how tips Dan, I really appreciate it. Hope you get a few 12 lb onions this season. All the Best Len.

Using a concrete mixer to combine your amendments is brilliant! I wish I had one. Is the recipe you showed us just for onions? Or do you use it for your other vegetables as well?
