vue - Angela Belcher: Using nature to grow batteries
http://www.ted.com Inspired by an abalone shell, Angela Belcher programs viruses to make elegant nanoscale structures that humans can use. Selecting for high-performing genes through directed evolution, she's produced viruses that can construct powerful new batteries, clean hydrogen fuels and record-breaking solar cells. At TEDxCaltech, she shows us how it's done.

Any chance there is a virus that can assemble long strands of Carbon Nanotubes? In one strand? Maybe a few miles long? Like for a space elevator?

Why am I just now seeing this 5 years later from when this was originally uploaded? I'd like to know more about the potential this technology has, and why it hasn't received more attention..
-
Wow. I can get viruses to design and build my home, car, and energy sources. We won't need smart people anymore.
-
holy wow! thank you for contributions towards making humans less environmentally destructive. these advances are incredible and I'm Def gonna check out her lab and see what they have been up to lately. so wait, does need more grad students? ;-)

Лишний раз убеждаюсь что на TED выступают люди которые способны в одиночку спасти или уничтожить этот мир.

2:36: Important to me? How about what's important to bacteria? I am pro biomimicry, but when we as humans "convince" living organisms to build something for us large systemic problems develop
-
Brilliant - we should clone her for further bio-engineered solutions.

Guys, she had to talk so fast because she was being timed. She did an amazing presentation and was able to cover the history and process of turning viruses into a power source while also adding humor to it. Brilliant job! She is an inspiration.

Considering that batteries are one of the biggest man made polluters I say we do it her way.
-
Damn thats a smart lady.
-
That was fast.
-
I just sent the idea to her. I'm hoping for the best.
-
I'm going to contact Angela Belcher and give her the idea, so it will have the best chance at being realized.
-
Like Venom and Carnage. ;)
-
I have had an idea along these lines for a while. An electrical generator that is constructed at the nano scale and taps into the most available form of energy we have, rain or shine - night and day.

@brockpickitup profit is not the problem. the problem comes when one uses the profit for selfish reasons instead of reinvesting in the benefit of the group. if its kept for selfish reasons, then the profit becomes an advantageous gain, creating competition, and competition gives rise to comflict. do I make any sense? lol
-
I realize this comment is over a year old, but you make a great point. I say step one is letting go of the concept of profit. We, as people, do what interests us for the good of all, which will extend to the good of ourselves. It's a fundamental change in human behaviour. Your thoughts?

She grew a battery. It's a living organism, but it's function is the same as a Duracell AA.
-
made no head or tail of the thing...what is she talking about here?!
-
damn she talks fast
