Kheti Virasat Mission and Aawaaz, NGO have jointly started signature campaign at 6.00 pm from sector 17, Chandigarh on 28th June (Thursday) to generate awareness about our right to have safe food. The campaign was a follow up event of Satyamev Jayate last episode which focused on the use of pesticide in agricultural practises and how it has deteriorated nutrients from our food. Indian agriculture uses enormous quantities of toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers for growing food and these are used indiscriminately by desperate farmers threatening their own health and that of the consumers. Our farmers, the annadatas, are themselves victims of pesticide poisoning. Umendra Dutt,Executive Director, KVM,said that it is very unfortunate that the food that we consume and feed to our families have turned poisonous. The use of pesticide has lead to genetic contamination of human cells. Therefore,we urge govt to take quick remedial action to stop this disaster. The volunteers and people in large number have joined the campaign which was telecasted in Aamir's show "ASAR" on 29th June. Gaurav Goel, an active member says |"Many or almost all pesticides in use in agriculture are either endocrine disrupters (that interfere with the hormone system) or carcinogens (cancer causing) or reproductive toxins or mutagens (causes change in genetic material), teratogens (capable of causing birth defects) or embryo toxins. Many of them qualify under more than one category." Therefore, we want to appeal goverment to provide us a food which is healthy and full of nutrients. More than 100 civil society organisations, religious groups and farmer unions are already pushing for the cause under a social alliance, Vatavaran Ate Samaj Bachao Morcha (VSBM). The main motive is to bring environmental health and ecological crisis to the center stage. We are confronting the entire political class with some hard questions related to destruction of ecology, contamination of food chain and high prevalence of environmental toxins in India. VSBM has adopted a People's Green Agenda seeking proclamation of 'Environment Emergency' in Punjab and a widespread epidemiological mapping to ascertain the impact of chronic toxicity in the Punjab state. (Bhatinda is the cancer endemic district of Punjab, linked to pesticides). The Morcha is also organising public dialogues at all district headquarters of Punjab to create awareness among the masses. Kheti Virasat Mission and "Aawaaz" invites you to attend the signature campaign to ban pesticides & GM foods which has an adverse effect on our health which is started at 6.00 pm from sector 17, Chandigarh on 28th June (Thursday), as Aamir Khan has rightly exposed the issue in last episode of "Satyamev Jyate" which has targeted the use of pesticides in large number and its adverse effects. Today the food we consume and give to our loved ones is contaminated by toxins, genetically modified organisms, dangerous additives, preservatives and illegal adulterants. Indian agriculture uses enormous quantities of toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers for growing food and these are used indiscriminately by desperate farmers threatening their own health and that of the consumers. Our farmers, the annadatas, are themselves victims of pesticide poisoning. Jai Varun Giri, member , Aawaaz said that it is time we worked towards reclaiming our right to eat safe food through safe farming which is sustainable, healthy and provides a livelihood for the farmer and healthy, nutritious food for the consumer. why is governemnt not banning the use of 67 pesticides which are banned in other countries. They are approved for use in Indian agriculture and are being regularly and routinely deployed. Sunil Bansal said that the good news is that there are numerous farmers, outlets, groups providing organic and safe food in almost every city in India. However we all need to work to increase their numbers and enable them to grow by choosing organic! Another piece of good news is that studies reveal that when exposure to toxins is stopped many of the negative effects reduce significantly and in some cases even disappear. Let your child be the one who says that I eat nutritious, toxin-free natural food because my parents are working to provide safe food! This campaign for safe food is the time for each one of us to stand up and be counted. We need to act now. In the interest of our own health and that of the future generations and for the health of the environment -eat organic, ask for a ban on pesticides, grow your own toxin-free food, compost your waste and use the compost to grow food to complete the cycle and spread the word.... Join hands with India for Safe Food! Therefore, we urge you to participate in the event and encourage people to demand a right to have safe food. It is a time that we work together and claim our right to eat safe food through safe farming practices.
