In Tanzania, where subsistence farming is the mainstay of the country’s economy, agricultural loans are often the only way for farmers to increase their productivity and raise their income. Yet, less than five percent of small holder farmers have access to formal financial services in Tanzania. A new agri-loan piloted by AccessBank Tanzania, in collaboration with the Partnership for Financial Inclusion, a joint initiative by IFC and The MasterCard Foundation, shows it is possible to provide sustainable financial services to underserved, rural populations in Sub-Saharan Africa.
