Throughout Bangladesh there are many and varied water bodies offering considerable potential for fish cultivation. But poor farmers are unable to provide all the inputs required for intensive production methods. Feed the Future Aquaculture, funded by USAID and implemented by WorldFish, is encouraging poor villagers to work on cage fish culture to overcome these obstacles. The project especially seeks to help women while their male counterparts are active helping hands in taking care of the cages. The project is also promoting the culture of Mola (a nutrient-rich small fish that supplies essential nutrients -- in particular vitamin A, calcium, iron and zinc) broods to the rural poor suffering from under-nutrition, including micronutrient deficiencies ('hidden hunger'). Farmers are happy with the output of Mola culture, which requires small time and effort to get results and have a good demand in the market.
