vue - Cannabis cultivation has a dirty secret, but the future is sun-grown | Dan Sutton | TEDxVancouver
Dan shines a light on the dark and dirty traditions of cannabis cultivation and argues that a sun-grown future is the only sustainable pathway for a burgeoning new industry. Recorded at TEDxVancouver at Rogers Arena on November 14, 2015. YouTube tags: marijuana, grow op, cannabis, cannabis cultivation, sun-grown TED, TEDxVancouver, TEDxVancouver 2015, Vancouver, TEDx, Rogers Arena, Vancouver speakers, Vancouver conference, ideas worth spreading, great idea, Dan Sutton believes that natural, sun-grown cultivation methods can enable a brighter future. In 2012, he took notice of the changing Canadian legislation around regulated cannabis, and began building a team of leading agricultural scientists. Together, they designed, built, and now operate a facility that produces the plant legally, distributing it through a subscription service for medicinal purposes. The entire operation is subject to intense regulation, and it is Dan’s business to know a lot about his product. The massive scope of cannabis cultivation today is a reality, legal or not. The world’s most profitable cash crop is being grown en masse in every state, province, and metropolitan city in North America. It is a decentralized, cellular, and multi-billion dollar black-market economy. A legal cannabis-cultivation industry with the potential to displace the dark market is emerging, and Dan believes it needs to leave the archaic bunker grow-op behind. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Large scale outdoor growth of cannabis can potentially create a bunch of carbon offset, because it is probably the most carbon hungry plant per kilogram, and it is easily one of the most efficiently useable and grow able crops. It can be grown completely organic with little extra effort or cost, and requires very little fertilizer if put in appropriate crop rotation. An acre of the sativa variety of cannabis consumes far more carbon dioxide that an acre of North American forest and can provide twice the paper, clothing, and building materials (there is an Indian company that is developing a hemp based concrete, and an Israeli company developed a low cost laminated house framing material a couple decades ago). Estimates are about 1400 Liters of bio diesel from one acre of this stuff. It can truly transform our economies and our environment...not to mention that recreational cannabis is safer than alcohol, medicinal cannabis is making massive strides all around the world (it is no panacea, but it can alleviate much of our pharmaceutical dependence). In short, it is morally, economically, and ecologically irresponsible to allow our governments to continue to use propaganda and lies in order to subvert the potential of this crop in favor of the betterment of the worst industries on this planet.

I'd rather grow indoors and have full control over environmental variables, outdoor growing isnt even an option in my country unless you want terrible quality weed, so yeah dont stop growing indoors and also we're gonna need to know that shit for when we get to Mars
-
real growers would happily accept slightly lower harvest for exceptional quality
-
this attack on indoor growing is obviously funded by corporate entities trying to overstate the consumption of resources, and so called pollution. they would love nothing more than to monopolies the entire industry and copyright the plant

we should all increase our carbon footprint to make the planet greener - yes that's right I said INCREASE because plants that make the planet green actually thrive on carbon dioxide emissions. Obviously only a complete fucking RETARD would fail to comprehend the fact that plant growth which makes the planet greener is directly proportional to CO2 emissions because of photosynthesis the process where plants absorb co2 water nutrients from the ground and sunlight to produce oxygen distill water and grow. due to the fact that the plants that are around today evolved in an atmosphere with ten times the co2 of today they are actually starved of it and will thrive when the co2 is increased it will make the planet greener. when they tell you that you need to reduce co2 for a "greener planet" they are flat out lying it is completely unscientific bullshit and they should be fucking ashamed of themselves because they're scamming money out of everybody in carbon taxes while in reality the co2 reduction is killing the planet these people are insane and evil

Cannabis breaths 7x the amount of carbon dioxide than a tree does. That alone balances the carbon footprint of the lights. And here in Canada we're moving toward clean electricity. So everything in this video is outdated and has no merit.

this motherfucker never smoked weed -
What about solar panels?

Growing outdoors is fine. But growing indoors let's you control when you want your plants to flower or how long you want them to veg.
If I could I'd grow my most picky plants inside like Sativa and Sativa / Indica hybrids. Ruderalis and Indica would be perfect for outdoor. Specifically Ruderalis if you want to harvest every 3 - 4 months like you would indoors since it auto flowers anyways while Sativa would need a longer light cycle. Actually I'm not sure I could grow Sativa's the way they were meant to be grown up here in BC since they need not only a more tropical climate but the sunlight hours associated with such places.
Indoor will always have a place. But I think it's also a good idea to be able to freely grow outdoors as well. AS long as it doesn't become to invasive to local plant life. -
Yo dude, you misspelled cannabis on one of your slides. This is unacceptable.

It's a good idea , but you must take into consideration, Chem trails , pollution , contaminated soil , Monsatan and it's legacy, You will get sick.....growers are using oil products to grow hemp , not natural , (poop) , compost , anything organic , ok , anything else Not ok.....Then you want to tax the shit , that means more corrupt politicians and the gruberment, it will be a free for all with these pricks...Don't forget , I have been telling people that Monsatan , bayer , syngenta , etc, have been trying to make a Bastardization of what was a beneficial plant in the beginning , Anything that oil can do HEMP can do better on so many levels, oil kills and leaves a trail of destruction, but hemp on the other hand ...Proof is in the pudding , Why it's classed as a class one drug , They are so afraid that their Empire will crumble AND it will , But not before they kill this planet. Time is running out.

Excellent argumentation about cannabis cultivation ; indoor cultivation is a HUGE waiste of energy and outdoor cannabis is the best cannabis EVER, in normal conditions.
Free cannabis market NEVER do the right thing because its primary purpose is money, nothing else
The only exception to the rule are companyies producing for medical purposes
Advertising is WRONG : the purpose of cannabis legalization was to help ill people and let happy smokers in peace, but advertising praise the use of cannabis. The anti-recreationnal usage of cannabis people will always use this argumentation
That's the"philosophy" of cannabis usage in Netherlands : they smoke it but they don't praise it, they are discreete, and that works for a long time now, quite smart actually...But in North America, people can help it, they always have to show off, it's in their nature...
