According to recent statistics the amount of fish available in Zambia's waterways had dwindled to a low level and is a matter of deep concern to fishermen and has a concomitant negative effect on the national economy. Presently the reservoir level of Lake Kariba is quite low due to persistent drought. Therefore, pond-based aquaculture is recognized as a viable alternative to traditional net-capture methods conducted in lakes and rivers. Zambians rely upon fish for protein in their regular diet, accounting for 53%. Consequently, fish must remain a high-demand production commodity.
