Excuse my ignorance, but aren't the eyes the beginning of roots and shouldn't they point down? Or does the root system need to be near the surface? Also, I like the potatoes I buy from the store and wow do they grow roots quickly. Clearly they are not sprayed with anything, right? BTW I live in Italy...

2:59 the Toxin is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanine Its also why your not supposed to eat potato with eyes on them. As they contain the toxin. Solanine is a bad toxin and causes neurological and other issues. Birth defects as well.

Great tip about the store bought. I'll be patient.

I bought my seed potatoes from the store and so far so good. The tubes, I think they are called are about 3 feet tall. I am very interested in all of this homesteading. I wanted to do this for a long time but I just was reluctant until a couple of weeks ago. I was just overwhelmed with food prices.

Cheers, thanks. Can't wait to plant mine in a few days.

Boy I've gotta get my seed spuds in the ground, there are eyes sprouting like crazy, "Here's lookin' at you kid" (an old Boggy line)
How many should a guy plant in a 5 gal bucket?
I'm gonna try planting a bucket inside a bucket, you just cut like 3 windows in one bucket and put it inside the other bucket, load with dirt then plant the spuds and when you harvest you just pull up the inside bucket and pluck what you need (this way you don't damage any spuds with a spud fork) and lower it back down inside, pretty slick huh. -
Thank you.

I've been gardening and harvesting about 2 years now. I never knew it could be so much fun. Thanks for your video because I've had potatoes from the store and forgot that I had them. When I found them, they had roots growing out of them. ( I was freaked out lol) but Being new to gardens and not growing any potatoes just yet, this video helped so much. Thanks again

love that accent of yours.

How long do you leave them to dry out after you cut them?
-
Good info! I always thought those little sprouts that grew on the potatoes meant they were spoiled.

Good info...cheers!
