Dragon fruit, also known as Pitaya or Pitahaya, are endemic to Central and South America. They are epiphytic and epilithic, which means that they naturally grow on trees and on rocks, climbing them. The fruit you opened is from the Helicereus undatus, originally from Central America. The tastier, sweeter ones, are the Selenicereus megalanthus, a yellow, prickly species from Colombia, Perú and Ecuador. The Selenicereus variety, which is much tastier, is a night bloomer. The more you pollinate their flowers, the bigger the fruits will be. And the flowers are spectacular!

-
Thanks a lot! i really appreciate your effort. tom morn i am going to germinate the same! :)

I really like the idea of using a plastic container with a lid for germinating seeds! Thanks for sharing. I've also grown dragonfruit from seed. To save the seed, I placed seeds on a plate and the gel stuck to the plate and I could "scratch" the dry seed off! Keep away from the sun in a well aired room to dry.

this fruit is endemic of Yucatan México, his name is pitaya -
The inside should be very soft when it's ready to eat.

Red fleshed Pitaya is superior in flavor.
