Continuous drought is threatening people's daily life and agriculture in northeast Thailand. The region is an inland area with a tropical monsoon climate, characterized by a more distinctive drought and rainy season than any other region of Thailand. Here the later half of March before the arrival of the rainy season is the driest season of a year. Local residents collect and store rainwater in a big tank to survive the dry season. Farmers in Changwat Udon Thani said if rain does not come by the mid of April, their daily-use water will be threatened. Most of the farmlands far from reservoirs are becoming desolated, and many paddy fields have dried up. According to the Thailand Royal Irrigation and Water Resource departments, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has ordered a national general survey of water resources to handle the drought. Thai meteorologists forecast the rainy season this year will come later than usual, and the drought will continue during the Water-Sprinkling Festival.
