Apple cultivation in Kashmir, India. Eighty per cent of the apples supplied to the rest of the country, along with Bangladesh and Nepal come from right from Kashmir and Srinagar. A majority of the state's income is dependent on apple production and sprawling orchards are a common sight here. There are many varieties grown, but the most popular and expensive is the Golden Apple. Soil, climate and environment are the most vital factors of cultivation. Output from any cultivation directly depends on these three factors. Overall, temperature is the most important factor that influences the geographical distribution of fruits like apple; over which human being has very little control. Kashmir is endowed with ideal agro-climatic condition for growth and development of various crops, fruits and natural resources. Likewise, Apple as a temperate fruit requires certain climatic condition along with fertile soil for optimum production. Apple is grown in almost all temperate zones in the world. However, in tropical area like South Asia, Apple grows only in highly elevated areas where temperature is low enough to meet the chilling requirement for apple production. In India, Western Himalayan region, mainly Kashmir region is the most suitable geographical land for Apple production. It is estimated that 90% of total production of India are contributed by Kashmir. Almost all varieties of apple require immense chilling of 7 Degree Centigrade for 1,000-1,500 hours in winter season. Such climatic conditions are only available in higher altitudinal areas of 1500-2700 meters in Himalayan region. And in summer season, average temperature should be around 21-24 Degree Centigrade for growth and maturity of the fruit. Frost free spring season and adequate sunshine summers are essential for suitable cultivation. During the summer season, range of temperature should not widely fluctuate because it may affect the quantity of production of the fruit. During spring, the temperature should not be too low with lot of rain, as that may hamper the bee activity, cross pollination and fruit quality.
