vue - Grow Mushrooms on Stumps and Totems
Mushroom cultivation can also be done on stumps and stacked section of logs called totems. Learn to grow mushrooms yet another way using plug spawn (dowel spawn) or mycelium from a spent indoor mushroom growing kit. A simple, fun way to create a mushroom farm in your own garden or landscape. A great addition to any permaculture project.

Brilliant. Excellent presentation!

Yes, totem style is fantastic, growth seems to being much sooner than other log inoculation techniques.
Thank you! -
Give it a try! (and send us a photo)

I think it would be cool if the cap on the totem was shaped like a mushroom cap.

What purpose do the embedded nails serve..?

I would like to try this technique with oyster mushrooms, using a spent kit. Will that work? I heard that poplar may be a good wood for oyster mushrooms; I have several smallish (~10 in) poplars which will be cut later this Fall. I love the idea of having several log totems sitting around the one edges of the woods.

only oak? or can other trees work, like maple or cherry?

I live in virginia do i have to worry about the logs getting to cold or will they come back next year with a soak in the spring? And is it the same if i use the totem method as far as the cold? Is it a certain time of the year you wanna do the logs?

Should the stump be fairly recently cut? I have a few stumps in my yard that were cut a couple years ago and am trying to find out if I can put them to work.

Do you have to soak the logs in water before inoculation? Do you practice that? And also, what do you think about soaking logs in a water bath of spores of the desired mushroom, in order to inoculate it directly with the spores and skip the spawn stage?
Thank you for sharing the knowledge and love! -
Thank you for sharing this. One question...Is it okay to inoculate in the fall? Thank you :-)
