You can start your own plants by seed indoors in January under fluorescent lights. That would give you the same results. Of course, you need to start with long-day or short-day onion seeds depending on where you live. I'm in WI as well.
-
So you just barely put them 1/2 inch into the ground, so they look like they're not even planted?

Ailsa Craig... think Ale-za... They are sometimes called ACE for their full name, Ailsa Craig Exhibition. They grow big but they don't store very long. Same with Walla Walla. ACE grow like a top-shaped, Hershey's Kisses. Candy is another good onion, it's an intermediate day onion that grows well from about the central USA to the northern states. I'm in Buffalo and usually grow all three.

Thank you Jim for the information. I have the Alisa Craig that I started from seed in January here in Wisconsin. I would love to have them get as big as yours. How far apart do you plant the tiny onion plant? Do you mulch your soil? Is 8 hours of sun o.k. for growing the onions? When you say '100 day' onion, does that mean from the day you planted the seed to the day of harvesting the HUGE onion?

Hello Jim
Happy new year. Are the onions your recommending, onions that have been started from seed. -
when you built your raised bed for the onions did you put a barrier down before you put in the soil? I was wondering if you needed to put down cardboard or something. I have tons of weeds and grass growing were the raised bed will be. thanks, gary

Nice video Jim. btw, Ailsa Craig is available from Dixondale Farm - I purchase all my plants from Dixondale. I'm located in New England, so have to plant long day onions. We like Ailsa Craig and Walla Walla.
-
Great video Jim!!!! Where are you located? I understand if you are below 37 degrees latitude you should grow long day onions and below that short day onions. I'm above actually at 41 degrees latitude.

Thanks for the great video Jim, your onions look awesome. I'll be buying plants next year instead of sets! Just wondering what zone are you in and when did you plant them?
