vue - Growing Potatoes in Straw - No Dig Potatoes
In 2012 I made a short video about how to grow potatoes in straw. I was going to post this video at the end of the growing season but got distracted for...a few...years. My bad, haha. Anyways, here it is now for anyone who is thinking of trying this method of potato growing. Here is an overview of the project. Time: 4 hours with 2 people to install the raised bed and about the same to harvest it and clean the spuds. Throughout the summer there was about 2 hours total spent putting more straw on top as the old straw compressed. In vs Out: We put in 30ish pounds of potatoes and got back around 250. I would do things differently in the future. The potatoes required at the outset could be severely reduced by cutting them up before planting. I would also space the potatoes out more as some of them appeared to be competing for nutrients. All food grown in this garden was donated to the local soup kitchen. Thank you for watching, and a happy harvest to you this year!

"recorded with a potatoe"

So 250 pounds on 27 m3 is 4,6 tons pr. hectare. That is bad yield.

Danial, Terrific yield, my friend. Good for you. This is the way I'll be doing it next year. Questions: Did you initially add fertilizer, then add more during the growing season? If so, what kind? Also, how much watering did the plot require during the season? Regards, John

Great crop: Question; I forgot some seed potatoes in my root cellar , I found them yesterday and they all grew very long vines from each potato in the dark cellar.. I was amazed to see this, however, I want ahead and planted the vines in my garden
do you think they will produce or should I buy new starts ? -

QUESTION: Do you think that you would have gotten as many potatoes at the end of the season if you planted cuttings (1 eye per piece) vs planting them whole as you did? Love the video!
I think that Ruth Stout just left a lot of her plants die back them planted on top of them the next year and covered with hay...look up her video, it's an older one but my favorite, I love what she has to say and the 23 minutes is well worth watching/listening to :) -
Very inspiring, thanks for sharing!
