Lol I had transplanted my strawberries in a raised bed and my rabbits that we let outside ate all of the leaves and strawberries from it.

Confused? After you put the red plastic down do you put dirt on top of the plastic? Can you please explain more in detail the steps after the red plastic?

Hmm I dont know which ones I have, but theyve been blooming and making tiny strawberries all summer (Texas Coast). They do send out runners, which I thought was nice (and didnt know before I saw it), because I bought a rather small bag of the baby bulb/roots. Im planning to plant them in a long row hanging pot type thing because the berries keep rotting sitting in the soil and I currently have no way of lifting them up. Theyre in a 1 foot deep raised bed right now.
I do have one question in particular.. how do I get them a decent size? (the fruit/berry portion). Right now they all seem to peak at about a nickel size. A few times I had one or two as large as a quarter (or rather, as long as one). Maybe its just because Im loosing so many to rotting on the soil but it seems to be a trend. Thanks -
Why does the red colour make them ripen faster? Can they sense other fruit around them is ripening?

i love apples!

Typically the strawberries need time to establish themselves before the hot weather arrives. You might be able to get away with strawberry transplants at this stage.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, strawberries don't tend to do well in tropical climates unless there is sufficient elevation for it to get a little cooler sometimes. People have done it, but they don't do as well as in temperate climates.
-
Tricia what do you thing will happen in the tropics where there is no change of season. I ask this question because I was wondering what happens when december is still 23 degree celcius not enough to cause the plant to go dormant..
-
Thanks! For a hot climate, University of Florida recommends setting out plants in October and using strawberries bred for mild climates: Festival, Treasure, Winter Dawn, Carmine, and Sweet Charlie.
