vue - Growing Sweet Potato Slips for Containers & Beds
Hi folks. Here's a look at how easy it is to grow your own Sweet Potato slips then plant them out into a container or a prepared garden bed. I've included a look at a few different ways to grow slips from "seed" potatoes to help you out. Have planted these into a Root Pouch & will be growing the vines up a trellis. Hopefully they will grow well enough through our cool season that we'll get a few small harvests of greens. Below is a link to Gardenate's climate selection page. Just select your climatic zone & it will give you a rough idea when particular varieties are ready to be sown/planted out in your area. http://www.gardenate.com/zones/ Many thanks to Penny Mitchell from Share the Seed Australia for letting me use her picture of a sweet potato in a glass. 👍 Cheers Penny. 😊 Subscribing to us here at Bits Out the Back is as easy as clicking below, http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=bnbob01 You can also find Bits Out the Back various social media where we post mini updates on the aquaponics, chooks, worms, wicking bed gardens & other small tidbits daily. www.facebook.com/Bitsouttheback http://bitsouttheback.tumblr.com/ http://instagram.com/bits_out_the_back @bits_out_the_back https://www.pinterest.com/bitsouttheback/ https://twitter.com/RobsUrbanFarm @RobsUrbanFarm Have a great one everyone. Hi. If I'm harvesting now, end of November, should I cure and store my sweet potatoes, then pull some out of storage say end of January and start to chit them? Or should I chit some now? Thanks

Uh oh I think I messed up somewhere. I grew slips, then planted in soil. The slips were out of control growing, so I cut off more and planted them as well. Will they produce potatoes?

Hi Rob.
Pleased to talk to you.
This method works in the north hemisphere, right? I want to grow sweet potato in my farm where temperature is not not chilly and we never have frosts, yet winter is always chilly and dry. Do I need to put this method into action? Because I prefer to work directly with ground.
Thanks very much indeed. -
So these grow or are tended to differently than the "regular" potatoes? No need to plant low and continually fill as the greenery grows?

I did a lot of Sweet Potatoes last season. The harvest was not too bad, but I forgot to keep any for seed for this year! Ugh, however I was pleased that there is one volunteer coming up. I'm going to try to use that one little plant for a couple of slips. Nice work Rob!

Thank you.

Sweet video Rob ;-) Very useful information. If you use the jar method, how do you know which goes in the water?
I give this video a green thumbs up! -
When should I be planting sweet potato slips, can I do this all year round?

Hi Rob, thanks for the video. Just subscribed! ;) Your website is so useful, I've been wanting to put together a growing chart but looks like you have got it all covered. I'm from Sydney by the way. Do you have a growing chart for fruit trees by any chance, including harvest months? Not just for apples and citrus, but including the tropical fruits that can be grown in Sydney. Also, which part of Australia are you located, so I can keep in mind when learning from your videos. Many thanks!
