Guava is one of the important commercial fruit in India. It is the fourth most important commercial fruit after mango, banana, and citrus. It is available throughout the year except during the summer season. Being very hardly, it gives an assured crop even with very little care. It's cost of production is also low be caused its requirements for fertilizers, irrigation and plant production is not much. Further its nutritive value is high. Therefore it is an ideal fruit for the nutritional security. It is known as apple of tropical. Guava is the third most important crop after mango, and banana. The crop presently (2003-04) covers 9.00 thousand tones and hectares with a production of about 133.79 thousand tones. The main guava growing areas in west Bengal are 24 parganas (south), Nadia, Medinipur, Barddhaman and Hugly. In the last decade several commercial orchards were developed in south 24 parganas. Medinipur and Nadia districts of West Bengal. Though several varieties of guava are available, growers in West Bengal prefer “Allahabad Safeda”, “Khaja”(BengalSafeda),”Kafri”,”Teli” and “Bhagalpur”. “Khaja” is the most preferred variety because of high yield, superior quality, is to accommodate 275 plants per hectare. In the first year after planting, several intercrops in the rainy season (Amorophophallus, Colocasia, Brinjal, Coriander leaf) and in winter season (Cabbage, Pumpkin, bitter ground) are grown which earns about Rs 150-200 thousands per hectare. From third year onwards a net profit of about Rs 250 thousands per hectare is very common from guava orchards in this region. Most of the growers prefer winter crop. The different types of guavas grown in Baruipur are as follows: - • Round shape guava: - This type of guavas is Allahabad Safed, Baruipur, Hafsi, Kagi. • Naspati shape guava: - This type of guavas is Lakhnow-49, Nasik, Hariga, Kerala etc. • Red Guavas: - This type of guavas is seedless, Apple shape, Safeda etc. Baruipur is a unique place of guava cultivation. Here many people depend on guava cultivation. Fruit processing centre has also developed, here mainly to process the guavas cultivated in this region. In this study, detailed survey was conducted to explain the micro level socio-economic features of guava cultivation of four panchayets. New techniques of guava cultivation are now being used for increasing guava production. At the western side of “Adiganga” guava cultivation is extensively done. Here types of guavas grown are Khaga, Phukkasi, Bhaddurakashi, Dudhekasi, Domra, Naspati, Bilash puri, Nagpuri, Dishi, Thikri, Lalkhal etc. Shikharbali, Ramnagar, Dhapdhapi, Dudhan, Beliaghata, Rana, Shakharipukur is famous for dishi guava production. Safeda, Apple shape and seedless guavas are new types in Baruipur.
