vue - Harvesting Purple Yam Bulbils
Learn more about growing yams here: http://www.thesurvivalgardener.com/how-to-grow-yams/ Freezing weather was on the way so I went about harvesting purple yam bulbils for next year's yam crop. The purple yam, also known as the tube yam, is a delicious and beautiful root crop.

Dude I envy you! How did you plant them? Could you post a video on how to plant the true purple yam here on youtube? Also, where did you buy your purple yam on ebay? Or at an asian grocery store? Im curious because i want to plant this yam.

Hi David, I have watched three of your videos regarding yam. All of which I enjoyed watching. This will be the third year I planted yam/dioscorea alata. The first year was not very successful, the second year was relatively successful as I showed in my video January 2016. I just posted a video yesterday showing how I propagate my yams. I am in zone 8b and I did not harvest two of my yam containers hoping that they will produce bulbils. The leaves are turning yellow, in you expert observation, do you think that they will pick up growth this spring and may produce aerial potatoes/bulbils?

That color is Amazing! I'll have to try and get some of those purple yams to plant! As was mentioned before they tangle in the roots of trees sometimes... Does this hurt the trees? Or can you plant the bulbils a few feet away from a tree to prevent root damage and easily access the yam root? Thanks David! As always you put out great info and I always get your yam song stuck in my head LOL!!! God Bless!

Picked half of one my yams yesterday I say half because the other 1/2 was enmeshed in tree roots. The half I brought in was over 10 lbs, cooking up some yams and chicken now, I have found it a great combo. With the extra I buried the peals they normally root, and the other half I will be cooking up for the worms. The bulbels are huge this year on some of these about the size of softball, glad I was not under them when the wind blew them down.
