vue - HBW 26 - Harvesting/Cultivating WLP775 Cider Yeast
This week we take a look at how to cultivate a vial of WLP775 yeast. The same method can be used for ANY type of yeast.

will this yeast die at 18 percent sugar gravity of 1.122

I've given this video a revisit (doing some yeast harvesting this weekend), and it really is the best video out there, clear, informative and dead simple to follow.
Not sure if you've done a video for the construction of the
stir-plate, but I'd like to see one.
All the best 🍺 -
Where do you buy your wlp775 from?
-
how much starter yeast do you put into your cider to ferment it and do you pour the starter yeast right into your cider or is there a way you star the yeast to put into the cider.
-
l hear it kills the Bactria and kills the natural yeast but wondering if it kills the yeast that you buy from the store like white labs. thanks reason why l would use it is because it kills the bacteria.

Hi Roy, great video of this technique. Whenever I have tried to harvest cider yeast POST FERMENTATION, I am enevitably left with a yeast that leaves my next cider cloudy. I read somewhere it has to do with the yeast cells expanding in size on reuse. I know this doesn't happen with beer sugars, as I have done it several times. Does this happen with your ciders/technique?

Hi i cannot find any wlp775 on the net, so my only hope is a final bottle of cider I made with wlp775 sediment at the bottom. Would you recommend using the cultivating techniques you have used in this video to grow more?
cheers

hey, thanks for sharing all of your findings mate :-) I've been struggling with making good cider so far.
two questions for you- 1- can you extend the 4 months period (before all the yeast die) by taking it out of fridge, adding some more apple juice, leaving it outside lets say over night and putting it back in? I used to bake home bread with bread yeast this this was how you feed it (at least once a week)
2- while in the jar, does it not produce any CO2 ? Do the yeast sleep and don't consume any sugar during this period? -
Hi whats the shelf life of the yeast if stored in the fridge?

Thanks a lot really helpful to know you can get your moneys worth. Honest tip
what is this "Rosy" juice or cider to use as a yeast starter or instead of yeast? -
So if I split that vial up into 6 jars and make a new starter with one of the jars I could split it up again, make a starker split it etc. etc.? because wlp775 is a pain in the ass (or in the pocket really) to get hold of where I live. I'd have to pay 21 pounds yeast+shipping. I'm intrigued but I'd rather stick to locally available stuff if I can't make that investment come around cheaper in the long run. btw have you ever tried that yeast in a beer?
-
Hi Roy, do you add any yeast nutrient when cultivating? Or just the 1.5L of juice and a vile of yeast?
-
Just a quick comment, the 6 Kilner Jars total 1.75ltrs but you only used 1.5ltrs of juice, where does the other 250ml come from, the WLP775 cant be more than 30ml if that. Fantastic video btw,

Roy, what is the limiting factor to just multiplying the yeast indefinitely? I understand what you say about 20% loss/month, but if you took that and made a new batch on the stir plate, aren't they brand new all over again? Is there a problem with genetic drift from their multiplying, if so, how does the manufacturer mass produce it? THANKS!

Hello Roy Just to help any one trying this out. I found that 100RRheostat works just right. It gives very smooth and steddy current control..Can get this from www.bitbox.co.ukCode VR086.
Thanks Richard -
It's ok I found a bigger magnet and it's worked ok thanks

Hello there Roy. I making this stir plate. In your next broadcast when you have time. Can you show the magnets you used, if you have some leftover from making your one. There is a few difrrant magnets available. I tryed 4 types and still not found the right onesThat make the stir magnets spin like it should lol Thanks Richard
