I'm curious why would you water the whole bed when the plant is in the middle. Wouldn'tbe enought just to water the plant that is in the middle? Thank you for sharing.

I live in western PA and have grown watermelons before. They get to size, but when they are cut, they are pink with white streaks in them. What am I doing wrong?

Question: With all that space, you are only expecting 4 watermelons!? That different. But you may be right, last year I had a 9" X 15' plot, and being new to this and not knowing any better, I planted about 57 seeds in that small space---and there were watermelon vines EVERYWHERE!! And after all that I only got 1 (one) melon because black rot or some sort of fungus got to the others---I had 21 total, but the one we got was pretty good/sweet flavor!

you surely know what you are doing, but I would like to know, watermelons 'supposedly' do not anchor their vines by developing roots along the vine right? If that is the case and it doesn't develop roots along the what is often very long vines...then why water the 'whole' bed? why wouldn't you just water the main plant where the roots are, isn;t that where it is drawing and supply all the water to the rest of the plant from, or does it draw water from the leaves/etc also like tomato plants?

Really great info! I was wondering if you can help me with my situation. My watermelons aren't getting bigger. I hand-pollinated them, but it's already been a week, but nothing, they're still the same itty bitty baby watermelon that they were when I pollinated them. I suspect it's because there hasn't been a good, sunny and warm week lately. The past weeks have been in the mid-60s and cloudy. Now the sun is beginning to show and it's been low-70s the past few days. I also suspect that the site I put them in wasn't big enough for the roots to spread. I've already lost 4 baby watermelons that shrivel. What could it be? Help, please?
