vue - How to Harvest Yeast From a Bottle of Beer and Make a Yeast Starter for Home Brewing!
I collected yeast (WY3068) from 4 bottles of my home brew (homebrew) wheat beer (witbier). These harvested yeast were then pitched in a small starter to build numbers of healthy yeast cells. Number of yeast cells more than doubled during the first starter. The yeast were washed and placed in refrigerated storage for a future homebrew batch. I will pitch this yeast in another starter prior to that next batch. This is an easy way to save yeast, save money (if you're a home brewer), and enjoy the hobby.

If you want to do it with wild yeast, the mad fermentationist blog has a list of commercial beers that have good active yeast. My thoughts would be step up to a 1/2 or 1 gallon batch and try it before committing to a 5 gallon batch. Drinkable science is fun lol

Some Breweries use Killer Strains of yeast for bottle conditioning (usually champagne) which kills the special yeast they use during primary fermentation.

Is there an easy way to figure out how much yeast you would need for a 5 gallon batch?

Thanks, I was surprised how easy it is to bottle harvest yeast. And, yes, Hopslam is one of the greatest!

Awesome video, i've been curious on how to extract the yeast culture from a bottle for my brews. Also thumbs up to the bottle of Hopslam! I live in northern Michigan and Hopslam is one of my favorite Bell's beers. Well, next to Two Hearted

Another great yeast harvesting video, adding it to my playlist of yeast videos, thanks for the video!

Hi oikoeco1, What kind of sugar you use for priming your beer ? I never dump the top liquid layer. I have tested and realize that the top liquid hold more vial yeast then the creamy layer on the bottom. Cheers

I have not used yeast nutrient but I don't think it'll hurt. I may start using it as I start harvesting more and more of my yeast. I harvested 3068 from a previous batch last year and saved it in the fridge for about 3 months before re-using it (without nutrient). It still worked great. Cheers!

Cool video. Wyeast suggests using the yeast like 2 weeks after you wash it. But homebrewers use their yeast months, if not a year later. Whats your opinion? Do u think u should have put a lil yeast nutrients in their...even if u use it in a few week?
