the tops that you cut off the cane stalk...can they be planted also? Good informative video!!

Great memories of my childhood. I don't eat it often anymore. Although some places around us like the venders at flea markets cut it fresh for you while you wait. Some southern pleasures are the best in the tropics. We live in the sugarcane producing state.

I would love to try sugar cane.

Danny when you cut, does the original plant send up new stalks? or is that it for the plan.

Thanks to Old Alabama Gardner, I miss being in sugar cane farm from Pakistan, extremely sweet and juicy, tall and fat. I don't remember planting as around planting season we were in the city and only enjoyed harvesting and then putting the dried root balls and some stalks that are no longer a fodder for livestock on fire. We used canine and premolars to peel the bark off and chew it and no sticks but we cut them in rounds. Wild boars love them but destroy fields upon fields.
It's been almost 25 year since I had a real sugar cane, we do get them here in Calgary but dried and juiceless sticks and bottled juice from Philippines. -
A video just popped up on my video side panel of commercial sugar cane planting in Louisiana. It was fascinating to see how what you did by hand was being done by huge farm machinery.

Danny you are a wonderful teacher. No wasted gibberish or repetitiveness, just the facts. Thank you and Wanda for the time you take out of you lives to teach! God Bless! Cathy

I grew up gnawing on sugar cane!!

Hey Danny, will the sugar cane plants you lopped to the ground, will they regrow into new plants?
-
Do you think you would ever get to the point where you would be willing to barter an exchange of your sugar cane syrup for some maple syrup?
-
Oh how I remember doing this at my Grandmother's house. She would cut it up for use and we would chew that cane. It was so good.
-
Very interesting!
-
Danny, the rows you cut down with the clippers and went back through, will they come up again next year?? If it does about how long will old ones last.
-
Soooo interesting, Thanks so much for sharing all your knowledge!

Had my first candy sticks in Viet Nam as a 18 yr old kid.

I don't think I ever remember eating candy sticks, but lord I sure did get in trouble cause I would sneak into the rhubarb, and eat it. I love raw Rhubarb. If I get it now, I like to add salt.

Danny, I was wondering if next spring, if you will have Deer or some other animals coming into those fields to nibble on the new growth Cane?
