Coimbatore, Sep 17 (ANI): The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University showcased a first-of-its kind flower fragrance testing device to assess the quality of flowers. The device is called "hand-held electronic nose" for jasmine and it takes about a minute or so to detect the quality of the fragrance. The device will come handy for exporters of jasmine. Jasmine is cultivated in 9,000 hectare of land with a yield of 9 tonnes of flower per hectare in Tamil Nadu. Designer of the device, Rajadorai, said it also cuts down costs of flower analysis in laboratories. The device can also be used to test fragrance of other flowers with minor changes in the sensor. Head of the department of floriculture in the state agricultural university, Kannan, explained the usage of the device. The device is user friendly and farmers can also use it to test the quality of fragrance of jasmine flowers and get a good price of the produce according to quality. These flowers are cultivated in private homes and are mainly used for worshipping. It is also cultivated commercially.
