India is the largest producer of jute contributing 61.2 per cent of the total world production. Before independence it had monopoly in world jute production. But after partition 80 per cent of the jute growing area went to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). There was phenomenal increase in the country's jute growing area from 5.71 lakh ha in 1950-51 to 11.46 lakh hectares in 1985-86 (increase being 100.7%). But during 1985-86 and 1995-96 declining trend was witnessed in area (decline being 35.6 per cent). The production has also depicted the similar trend; increasing at an average annual rate of 6.54 per cent during 1950-51 and 1985-86 but declining at an average annual rate of 2.89% afterwards. It is recently that there has been some recovery in the acreage and production of the crop in the country. West Bengal is the largest producer of Jute in the country followed by Bihar, Assam and Orissa.
