A film about industry and agriculture in Britain - history and new innovations - especially atomic power. The white cliffs of Dover, seagulls calling, fields above the cliffs. A small fishing village, cottages on heather-covered slopes, rowing boats. A dock with large steamers and cranes. A lake amid mountains, a field of corn. A thatched cottage by a river then Battersea power station by the Thames in London. Farmland then a busy street with a green London bus. A (Massy-Harris make) combine-harvester pulled by an open-topped tractor. Women in a factory. Business men and women cross a bridge over the Thames in London, buses (with an advert for Dulux), taxis, cars. People visit a stately home. New high rise flats - glass and blue painted metal. An elongated globe; a square drawn around the British Isles and lines drawn to show its latitude. Closer up, a 'Europe' label on the continent - commentary on trade with lines drawn in for trade routes with the Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain, down towards the Mediterranean and across to America. The boundaries between England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland (shown as a whole) are drawn onto the map. A steel works from outside. A textiles factory; rows of women with foot operated electric sewing machines. Pottery; a dresser filled with patterned crockery. A half-built ship, a lathe, rows of new cars, a laboratory with rows of chemicals. An aeroplane with twin propeller engines on each wing and 'BOAC' on the side takes off. A man looks at pressure gauges (?) The steel works; a steam train on tracks outside, smoking chimneys. Portraits of British inventors including Sir Charles Stevenson. A steel furnace. The use of steel in other industries - a chassis frame (?) is welded together. Lengths of cloth, a diagram of the Spinning Jenny and later developments on it. Mechanical looms. The making of synthetic fibres - nylon etc. A potter's workshop; a wheel is used with a mould to make a bowl and the golden edging is added to a fired and glazed cup. Crates of pottery labelled 'Chicago' loaded onto a ship. A coal mine; miners use machines to break up coal and load it onto carts with shovels. A map of Great Britain coloured black to show minefields, orange for steel works, blue for the textile industry and green for pottery. Battersea power station, telegraph wires, inside a power station - control panel. Experiments with new techniques in a laboratory.
