vue - Innovations in Agriculture
Gleason Walley discusses his modification to the standard bell syphon aquaponic system, and all of the componets. What makes this a true innovation is that it is an external Bell syphon rather than an internal in the tank, making it much easier to adjust.

Wow .. alot of awesome comments.. sorry it took so long to get back to you all.. First Gleason Walley is currently an FFA Advisor and I am a former,,, trying to address every ones thoughts...clear tubing... problematic as we are trying to minimize the exposure to the light.. any light exposure would result in algea growth.. which could be problematic to the plant and to the fish depending on the species.... As for how the how the siphon breaks... it runs out of water in the grow bed and sucks air.. as far as long term .. not to sure as this green house was shut down at the end of school .. i may be building one for my basement now that it is heated..

how do you break the siphon ?

I am sorry this took so long to get back to you all.. Brian i personally would not use any thing that is transparent as it could promote algea growth, that is why the rock is higher then the water line and all tubing and PVC are not transparent.
At the time of this Film I was an FFA Advisor i saw the power that it has on the power of changing the lives of our youth and shaping them into the leaders of tomorrow. I am Planning on Putting plans together in the near future with proceeds to go to Mr Walley.
Bryan - as far as long term problems i may make a follow up video a few year later and see if their is any problems how it has progressed and issues that have been encountered. -
This video was very informative, it reminded me of my days in the greenhouse at my FFA chapter in Albany, Ohio. FFA is amazing! My best memories are from experiences and friends from FFA. I was super excited to come across this video and see that agriculture innovation is still instilled upon our youth. This is a great project. I may try it with my tomato plants next year. Hooooray for future farmers- from me, a fourth generation farmer to new farmers and continuing generations- share, cooperate, communicate, and educate each other.

Good to take the siphon out externally. I think you should make it of clear tubing and acrylic. Has anyone used limestone as the gravel? Should be a good PH regulator.

Didn't like the idea of a hole in the in the bottom of the growbed as it could be prone to leaks and it meant that the growbeds couldn't be supported on a flat base without additional problems. With this system the Bell syphon can easily be removed and/or adjusted without disturbing the growbed at all. This is a great step forward in the application of a Bell syphon in aquaponics.

Curious what sort of long term problems you have experienced with the external bell siphon (if any)?
