Producing milk in tropical conditions is often limited by the poor quality of forage. Enrichment of grass by the addition of tropical annual legumes can lead to improvement in protein while decrease in fiber in the diet. When diets with similar energy and protein contents but different amounts of soybean meal and corn by using different forage sources: sorghum silage, sorghum-Canavalia silage or sorghum silage plus Vigna, were fed to dairy cows, the use of legumes was shown to decrease feed cost and improve milk yield. The use of legumes in feeding dairy cows is a strategy that can help to achieve the needed nutrient concentration in the dairy diets, reducing the use of grains and costs.
