Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledges 500 million Yen towards agricultural development in Ethiopia. Full story: Japanese Prime Minister pledged 500 million yen towards agricultural development in Ethiopia on Monday (January 13), the first day of his week-long visit to Africa. Shinzo Abe paid a courtesy call to Ethiopia's Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn's office where they discussed trade and how best to help transform Ethiopian farming. Abe lead a strong delegation of Japanese businessmen with different interests. Most of the delegates were looking at exploring the agricultural and energy sector. Abe said his delegation was looking at ways they can partner with the government and private sector in driving Ethiopia's industry. Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn thanked Abe for Japan's financial contribution. Japan's direct investment in Africa was $460 million in 2011, compared with China's $3.17 billion, according to the Japan External Trade Organization and China's government data. Resource-poor Japan has long been keen on Africa's vast natural resources, even more so since dependence on oil and gas imports surged after the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster shut almost all of Japan's nuclear reactors.
