The Lower Mekong Climate Impact and Adaptation Study is one of five main tasks of the Mekong ARCC Project. This study lays the foundation for the whole Mekong ARCC project by providing the scientific evidence base for identifying highly vulnerable and valuable agricultural, fisheries and natural systems assets in the Mekong Basin, defining adaptation options and priorities, and selecting pilot sites for enhancing existing adaptation, and demonstrating new adaptation strategies. At the kick-off meeting in Vientiane, Lao PDR, Olivier JOFFRE, Agriculture Specialist, elaborated on challenges on agriculture in the lower Mekong Basin. The Mekong ARCC is a USAID-funded program and part of the Lower Mekong Initiative, which was announced by US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton as a means for the US to support regional efforts to adapt to the impacts of climate change. The program will use a science based approach to develop new approaches for rural communities to adapt to climate change impacts in the years to come. As the most vulnerable, rural populations face real challenges from climate change to their traditional livelihood and way of life which has broader implications for food security, health, and security in the region.
