In the Balaram Village of Dhalai district in Tripura, mushroom cultivation had been very successful. Two clusters namely Balaram & Maracherra of Dhalai districts were identified with less irrigation facility coupled with low cropping intensity 158%. The clusters have been operating with nine units at hand and another nine in pipeline. Here the local farmers bound to grow paddy as the solo crop twice a year with intermittent vegetable outputs that also did not do well in raising extra income generation. Therefore, mushrooms cultivation was started in May 2008 as an extra livelihood generation amongst the tribal farmers by ICAR's close collaboration and supervision in Tripura under NAIP project, "livelihood improvement". The Mushrooms cultivation was first initiated through in-situ training-cum-live demonstrations among the fifty-five beneficiaries of all the six Self Help Groups (SHGs): Abachanga, Khabaksha, Sharda, Pohor, Bodol, and Loknath. Till December 2011, 300-farmers have started mushrooms cultivation, producing around 2062 kg of fresh oyster mushrooms at the expenditure cost of Rs. 46492 (Rs. 12 for a poly bag filling). Their man-days have also increased from 230 to 275 -days. In Balaram cluster, male farming community is divided into small [115], marginal [981] and landless [10] categories, while women farming community is constituting 55, 465 and 7 in the small, marginal and landless categories, respectively. In Maracherra cluster, there are 564, 2820 and 19 small, marginal and landless farmers respectively whereas women farmers are 278, 1394 and 10- who have adopted the mushroom cultivation. Of the two clusters, several farmers of Balaram Villages successfully cultivated mushrooms and are selling them in local markets at Rs. 80 per kg.
