The New Zealand Greenshell mussel aquaculture industry produces over 140,000 tons annually and valued in excess of $250 million. California is the world's fifth largest supplier of food commodities and has the strongest ocean economy in the nation with over 840 miles of coastline. It has the potential to augment its land-based agriculture success with offshore aquaculture for increasing both economic prosperity and local food security. Over 32 million pounds of live mussels were imported last year. Californians should take a lesson from New Zealand's goal to increase aquaculture production to $1 billion by 2025 in a sustainable way that preserves the environment.
