Being once severely hit by war, Vavuniya today is an emerging district rising amidst the bitter experiences of a thirty-year devastating conflict. Though the war has been ended, people in this area have not yet won the battle of poverty. Majority of the rural population in Vavuniya lives in extreme poverty with substandard living conditions. Despite several economic activities taking place in the district only few livelihoods have been proven to be successful in generating a sufficient income to overcome poverty.
