vue - Planting Ginger, 2013/14 crop..
Planted out our main crop of ginger a week ago into a wicking bed along the front fence.. A few more rhizomes will also be going into the Spice bed down behind the chook shed once I pull last seasons turmeric out later this week.. Am really looking forward to harvesting this years plants come next autumn as the last crop wasn't really wasn't the best & most had been saved for replanting.. Would like to thank Jeff once more for the generous amount of ginger we received in the yacon/ginger swap.. I hope to be able to pass some of this years crop on to others to help them out next season.. For more regular updates from the chooks, worms, aquaponic & wicking gardens come visit us at http://www.facebook.com/Bitsouttheback Have a great one everyone...

Hey rob, do you recon i could get away with growing ginger in tasmania. Nutrients isn't a problem but its the heat i would be worried about.

Nice ginger crop. Just harvested mine and downed the first batch of ginger beer. Waiting to bottle the stronger stuff for Christmas ;)

No problem Dallas :) Have some sitting in water right now trying to get it motivated to sprout :D
-
I like it sliced thinly (potato peeler does a good job) & added into stir fries Dallas :) The plants in the bed out the back have sprouted but no signs from the saved root sections intended for the bed out the front as of yet :/ Cheers & have a great one.. Rob.

Not really deep Dale.. The rhizomes stay just under the surface with the roots going down another 200mm/8" or so.. Have made ginger beers a few different ways in the past & wanted to use some to make ginger beer but most has gone in cooking this year.. Will be more than enough from the next harvest to make some up I think.. Cheers :)

Does ginger and tumeric grow really deep roots? I ask because of the depth of the IBC's you're planting them in. Ginger beer is awesome. Do you make ginger beer as well Rob?

I do say no, But my "no" don't carry much weight, Might have to plant them when she is not home....
