I regrow spring onions (scallions)by just cutting some off then sticking the roots in a glass of water. I haven't bought any spring onions in 6 months!

Heat up a nail or old screwdriver you don't care about to poke the holes in the plastic at room temperature --- guaranteed, the bottle won't break.

just thought of a possible way to minimize soil loss here. how about making a small collar areound each seedling with landscaing cloth before placing inside the slots in the jugs? you can suff them in and smooth them out to help cover each of the opening. this should also help limit the amount of sun exposure to the roots.

really, "sustainable living" and NPK in one sentence?

You can make a small hole in bollom and add a few strings of yarn and place it into another bottom of another bottle the water will wick up into the dirt and you won't wash the dirt out of onion holes.
