vue - REGROWING SPRING ONIONS AT HOME
It's easy to regrow spring onions (green onions) from their basal parts. This simple experiment shows the importance of the length of the basal part cut off for a swift regrowth. It is recommended to start the regrowth with basal parts having a greenish top.

how often did you water them?

Hoping someone can help to clarify my question. I started doing this about a month ago after I came across this vid and a few others. I bought a bunch from my local supermarket and had the roots in a plastic container with some water and when they started to have green shoots, I transplanted then into some potting soil, also in a plastic container. The get plenty of sunshine from my kitchen window sill and I water them almost every other day.
But the shoots I have been getting are empty in the center. This can best be illustrated if you take a red pen and draw a circle. The red circle that is drawn represents the growing shoots outer, but like the red circle, inside of the red circle it is empty. They also get quite flimsy and weak after they grew to a certain height.
Has anyone the same experience as what I am getting ? Is this what you will get from the regrowth or did I do something wrong ? Maybe I got a bad bad bunch from the supermarket ? The ones I bought from the supermarket is full of fragrance...but the ones I grew almost does not have any.
Any suggestions/help greatly appreciated and many thanks in advanced. -
Thank you so much for sharing, will try this :)

I tried this and it worked well for the first growth (in a pot w/ soil). The 2nd time around the growth started to get less firm and very flimsy. Turns out the bottom where the roots were got really soggy and smelly.... the roots themselves looked like snot. The whole thing smelled terrible and I was forced to trash em. Maybe too much water? Trying again w/ far less water

I'd like to try this today, how often do you water it using that same size bowl? can I keep the bowl in my kitchen (no sunlight) or do I need direct or partial sunlight (sunlight that comes in my living room)?

If you grow them individually, and not in clumps, when you harvest just dig down around the stalk with a finger and cut them off just above the roots. Refill the soil in the hole and forget them. Green shoots will grow through the surface of the ground, and in a few weeks you'll have full size scallions again. And sometimes the stalk will split and you'll get two! Works great for just a little work. I got a full second crop last year.

Thanks for sharing. Very useful.

I re-grow my spring onions this way too, I use the finely chopped tops for garnishing potatoes and also I dehydrate them, then grind to make a nice seasoning / powder that you can use to give that spring onion taste to anything.

That is amazing! Thank you for sharing!

Sun is def a key to shorter one's growth. I had a small one in the fridge with water and it didn't grow for days. Once I moved it into the sun, 5 days later it grew 3 inches.

Interesting, but in terms of food production, almost useless. The lower white part, the bulb, is the part generally eaten. It would however, be extremely useful if you could regrow the lower part (The bulb) from the green stalk. But of course that can't be done.
