Following a meeting with FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva, Rwanda’s Minister for Agriculture and Animal Resources Geraldine Mukeshimana elaborates on the importance of beans for the country’s food security and healthy nutrition. “Rwanda is the world’s largest consumer of common beans. We promote them not only for food security but also for good nutrition as they are the perfect food for people,” she says explaining their efforts to bio-fortify beans introducing zinc and iron. To celebrate their contribution to global food security, the UN celebrates the International Year of Pulses in 2016. Pulses are important food crops for the food security of large proportions of populations, particularly in Latin America, Africa and Asia, where pulses are part of traditional diets and often grown by small farmers.
