No. The oldest artifacts of saffron farming are from the Minoan civilization (Aegean islands, Crete and Thera about 3500 years ago), not Arabic or Spanish. This Empire traded saffron with the Egyptians, Assyrians and Hebrews (see reference to the spice, Karkom, in "Song of Songs"). See the following paper http://muse.jhu.edu/article/54156
