vue - Sow Marigold & Carnation seeds - Allotment 2015 day 4
Day 4 shows what we have been getting up to throughout February. It was time to hand the keys in on my old plot and so I made arrangements to get it tidied up and also to move everything that was coming across to the new plot. I really enjoyed getting to know all my allotment neighbours and wish them a great growing season this year. It is also time for me to turn my attention to some of the flowers I am going to be growing this year, with Marigolds and Carnations first on the list. We also take a look at the seedlings. Something is wrong with the onions so we do another sowing of them and learn a bit about winter growing. Even though its wet windy and horrible, there is still plenty to do.

Can you tell me how long it takes from the time a carnation seed is planted until it blooms. Thank you :)

How exciting to start a new plot! It will be fun watching you design and plant it.. As for learning as we go; as many years as I've been gardening, I am still learning something new and making some of the same mistakes. I wish I had kept a garden diary every year. (Like that would have helped) OBTW, I think you are going to need a new shed, or maybe a greenhouse attached to that one?? Take care, Kim

Wonderful video ! many thanks for this moment....have a nice day

Good on you for giving the flowers a go, I'm sure they will look fab. I am planning on growing more flowers this year, they are very beneficial to help aid pollination. The bees will love it :)

Hi Aaron I had the same trouble moving allotment but luckily I'm a heating engineer so was able to use my van so I took nearly everything of my old plot which I gave up on the end of December. I took my old shed and greenhouse with me and luckily there was a old shed on my new site so now have two which gives me the room I need for storage. So good luck on new one and I'll keep viewing.

You sure do have a full shed there, Aaron. I'm looking forward to watching your progress with the new plot. We've had several days of non-stop rain here in Florida and it is beginning to get a bit old. I'm not used to the gloom. But, I shouldn't complain when so many of our friends are having non-stop snow. Those marigolds will look lovely in your garden.

Man always needs a bigger cave, I mean shed!!!. I've got two more to put up. Only one of them on the allotment - the other is at home to free up some space for a small grow room. I've been promising myself one for years now. Just a lack of space that's stopped me.
All the best Aaron. Chris. -
I find the trouble in having a bigger shed Aaron is you tend to fill that too, Point in case look at mine lol
-
As to space, what about building a lean to attached greenhouse against the shed. It might help it not blow away as well as giving you more space.
I use heat to germinate my onion seed. I never use sets as I like odd varieties that are only available by seed.
Bring on spring🐣 -
hi give them Onions a haircut leave about 1inc1/2 they will be fine

Those chilli's look great. It's a lucky person that gets your well tended old plot. Looking forward to seeing how the flowers turn out. Did you see the Great British Garden Revival show about bringing carnations back into favour?

Best foot forward ! Out with the old in with the new !!!

I'm looking forward to seeing how you develop the new plot because I like watching hard work. Good thinking on the van because we all have a lot more money lying about our gardens than we thing.
Best Wishes, Brendan. -
Chief Brody made the wise observation in Jaws that they were gonna need a bigger boat... and seeing all the stuff in your shed, I concur. Like I've said before, you're a braver man than me when it comes to onions, I stick to onion sets - I'm too much of a pussy to attempt to grow them from seed. Other than your onions... everything else seems to be ship shape and in order. I haven't done jack yet... everything is still in a packet ... got to make an attempt soon though. Anyways dude, I always enjoy your catch ups, Cheers Adam

I'd toyed with the idea of grow lights but I don't grow for show so it's not really worth it for me. This is a frustrating time of year, I want to get everything sown but it's just too early for Yorkshire. Everything seems to catch up anyway.
All the best. -
Nice update Aaron, having lots of rain here at the moment so not able to do any filming this weekend, i like your selection of flower seeds looking forward to watching them grow.

The allotment system fascinates me ! Although I really love being able to see my garden rain shine and snow from my couch :)

I am growing carnations this year for the first time. I have always love them. Your onions look like my onions. Mine were looking good, they had two stems and them I put them in a greenhouse and it got below zero here and they dont look so good now. I have gotten lots of bulbs to replace them. I know it was a sad momet leaving the old plot.

I walked to my plot today , in bright sunshine. As soon as i got my spade out, it pissed down all day..lol..Typical.. I still cracked on doing things though..:)
Over the years, i have had no problem with starting seeds off on my kitchen windowsill, especially onions, at this time of year..Grow lights are only for exhibition growers in my eyes, and even then, these lights lights only came on the growing scene in the last 3 years or so..Unless you were into growing jamacian herbs..lol..What i am saying is, they never used to have grow lights etc, in the olden days, and they did alright then..:). Regards, Dave.
