See how Sugar Beets are harvested in Minnesota, the nations number one producing state! I've been asked where do all the Beet Tops go? First of all you need to know the tops are mainly water, with little if any nutritional value and only the crown of the beet that is removed has some livestock value if grazed. As you can see as I filmed the topping operation most beet tops/greens fall between the rows where the tractor tires and tires on the back of the beet digger/lifter push them into the soil. While the two lifter wheels on each beet row turn at ground or tractor speed and pinch the beets out of the ground/soil. Independent at the top of the lifter wheels are spinning paddles that throw the beets out of the wheels and onto the cleaning bed behind. These lifter wheels are spoke wheels, which allowing room/area for the soil to fall out to the side of the wheels as dug, also covering most of the crowns and green beet tops or the foliage the topper removed. Thanks for Asking Charles, hope that helps. Sincerely Alan Roebke (REB-Key) Alexandria MN Informed TV
