Bovine Ballistics -- A range report Butchering cows in this neighborhood, while not an everyday occurrence, certainly is a normal occurrence. The usual procedure is to shoot the cow and kill it, providing an instant and humane death. I dispatched this cow with a shot to the brain from a distance of 10 feet. I followed that shot up with a second shot, also to the brain. At this point we diverged from the normal butchering operation. This cow is headed for the dinning room table, but it also presented an opportunity to do some ballistic tests with lead bullets, loaded with Unique powder. Careful consideration was given so as not to damage meat destined for the table. We decided to do the penetration tests just behind the normal heart/lung shot placement. We would establish a point of impact with an orange target spot, and shift that point from shot to shot. We hoped to catch a bullet after penetrating the cow -- and used a column of water filled milk jugs as containment media. Took a little doing to line everything up, but it worked out well. The results: The 32-20 penetrated 30 inches of cow and 6 water filled milk jugs. The 38-55 penetrated 30 inches of cow and 5 water filled milk jugs. The 45-70 penetrated 30 inches of cow and 7 water filled milk jugs. The load specifics are listed in the photos with their respective bullets. Hope this helps.
