vue - The Mean World Syndrome - Desensitization & Acceleration (Extra Feature)
Buy DVD at http://www.mediaed.org The Mean World Syndrome Media Violence & the Cultivation of Fear A new film based on the late George Gerbner's groundbreaking analysis of media influence and media violence. Featuring George Gerbner and Michael Morgan For years, debates have raged among scholars, politicians, and concerned parents about the effects of media violence on viewers. Too often these debates have descended into simplistic battles between those who claim that media messages directly cause violence and those who argue that activists exaggerate the impact of media exposure altogether. The Mean World Syndrome, based on the groundbreaking work of media scholar George Gerbner, urges us to think about media effects in more nuanced ways. Ranging from Hollywood movies and prime-time dramas to reality programming and the local news, the film examines how media violence forms a pervasive cultural environment that cultivates in heavy viewers, especially, a heightened state of insecurity, exaggerated perceptions of risk and danger, and a fear-driven propensity for hard-line political solutions to social problems. A provocative and accessible introduction to cultivation analysis, media effects research, and the subject of media influence and media violence more generally. Also includes three additional short features -- ideal for classroom use -- that take a closer look at Gerbner's analysis and the Mean World Syndrome. 1. Media as Storytellers: "Nothing to Tell but a lot to Sell" -- Explores the significance of commercial media eclipsing religion and art as the great storyteller of our time. (7:32) 2. A Mean World Case Study: Child Abductions -- Provides an in-depth look at how media coverage of child abductions has fed parental anxieties out of proportion with statistical reality. (4:17) 3. Further Effects of the Mean World Syndrome: Desensitization & Acceleration -- Examines how heavy exposure to media violence normalizes violence, numbing some people to real-world violence even as it whets the appetite in others for ever-higher doses. (8:48)

There are so many people that do think better of themselves and do not commit to violence. There are so many people that see how they were wrong and regret being violent. There are billions of people that did not encounter violence. But the media doesn't show that. Because it's not as interesting as the 1/300000000 that do go crazy.

Your 100% WRONG... Look at our society old man. Everyone is a pussy, and they don't even stand up for themselves or kids so u can forget a stranger on the street. The reason for the violence is to satisfy the violence inside wanting to come out and do justice. They live their hero dreams on tv because they can't in real life. Truth is most of these people are not worthy of being anything higher than slaves and government gave them freedom to control everyone. There's really only about 15% intelligent people in the world. Its always been that way and always will be.

humans...just as ants and we kill more ants every week than humans in ten years...and these "scientific" accounts they give...all he said is that if you speed up you will drag him because you dont know how fast he is...BUT...he is nonviolent...so you increSe your drag and foil yourself and it aggravates you so you watch movies to go up again but he watches them to go down and think...okay, schmience man...

when a person works they think they are buying the right to airtime to tell you all they think they know which is only part of what they learned...but no one ever says that the focus on negative and positive creates a neutral in your mind and body...which is why no matter how smart we get...we are still wrong.

There are rare moments like this that makes me ashamed to be human. I mean, animals have an excuse to act the way they do, because of raw, primal instinct. We as humans have no excuse for that. I know it's hypocritical of me stating this, but I believe we're suppose to be better than this.

This is the scary truth, our generation is becoming numb to the sex and violence on media. And to counter this it's becoming more graphic and intense. Very sad

I believe desensitization works the other way as well. With everyone being kind to each other we grow apathetic to these niceties. We get colder and more uncaring. Have you ever thought maybe the human race is just simply self destructive? Like maybe we're just destined to be jerks to one another?

A world in fear, that praises idiocy and rudeness, and accepts aggression as a normal attitude as long as one succeeds or stomps others on its way to ascension, that's what we got.
It fits with the higher schemes of those in control, the rich, the minority that holds for themselves most the world hard earned cash(which also happens to use politicians as their puppeteers), and only cares to keep it this way.
Most working class people live scared of tomorrow, of their boss, their neighbor , the immediate future is unknown and dark for most people, yet instead of uniting, that promotes a fake sense of self value that ignites a careless and extremely selfish behavior, the survival of the fittest.
We are going back to the primal ages, where men were brutes and conquered by pure strength, only softened by police and rules.
And this is what they need to keep things the way they are.
Who are they? People who by any means, some legal, some illicit have got the banks working for them, and decide what is convenient for the world economy.
And therefore the media is under their control.
It might not be exactly like this, because who can know it for certain? It's plausible, as one of the causes of this growing humane decadence.
Religion has nothing to do it, it's obsolete, humans can behave as such without the help of any god or super entity.
We could be all happy, work together, even if the world is overpopulated we could share the land and there is enough room and goods, both material and spiritual for everyone, because we are given with the gift of Reason, the unique of the sentient beings able to feel regret, sorry and recognize one self, yet, the smartest ones want it all for themselves. -
I don't buy the argument that seeing violence equates to the commission of violent acts. Those who are predisposed are exactly that PRE-disposed to violence, I believe that it is just human nature not to want to accept responsibility for our environment or other people's problems. It's the difference between the herd mentality and the leader mentality, both of which are not biologically derived but related to education, the nurturing environment of one's earliest awareness. A greater truth is that of projective identification, but he only tangentially touches upon this more relevant axiom.

People use media violence as a scapegoat. And yeah if I saw a dead body on the road i probably woukdnt get in front of cars and drag it somewhere and then ur dna is on that person

Lots to think about, thank you.

It all depends on the person. They have a choice to watch media content that is creative, inspiring or educational, such as documentaries, or comedies, as some of you have pointed out. Some people might not like that kind of stuff and would rather prefer to have their senses dulled by gratuitous violence. Whatever the case, it's the lower classes that suffer the most when it comes to being influenced by media content, since they often lack the education that gives them an informed decision.

This video does a good job in further desensitising people....

I think he really missed the point of the fourth Rambo. The characters that Rambo was helping wanted peace and they didn't show the absolute horror that's on their faces when they see the aftermath. Rambo, himself, is a great allegory to the idea of desensitization. He walks away from it like nothing happened.

Or, you know, people like to hunt and make sure that dangerous creatures like coyotes don't kill their pets or ruin their garden...and, yes, occasionally not be victimized. It's not the only reason people in America own guns, just one of the reasons.

True, waaay too much! No way around it you HAVE to be careful with these vids. I had to skillfully apply mute then take advantage of ffwd! lol The real vid minus the bogus and gratuitous violence is like 2 min, tops! =^>

Less than 2 minutes in and I call bullshit. If anyone's ever been in a situation like that where some random citizen in hurt or robbed in your presence, you'd know how difficult it is to bring yourself up to be the hero. Your first thought is to avoid getting hurt or robbed yourself, such is the natural biological fight-or-flight systems we have developed over the past epochs of evolution. If everyone was designed to act like a hero, then why does society regard bravery as a trait to be needed?
