vue - The Persians & Greeks: Crash Course World History #5
In which John compares and contrasts Greek civilization and the Persian Empire. Of course we're glad that Greek civilization spawned modern western civilization, right? Maybe not. From Socrates and Plato to Darius and Xerxes, John explains two of the great powers of the ancient world, all WITHOUT the use of footage from 300. Where would you like to live? In a place where you would be protected by the law, participate in public affairs of your city in various way, enjoy sport, theatrical and musical events, with a philosophical school, or in a place where you would be just protected by the law? I bet most people would pick the curtain 1. Obviously, the narrator would chose the curtain 2.

"Light touch" not wrong but that is if you are grading on a curve. When the Egyptians revolted the Persian King took all the noble men and women and showed them how their girls were sold as sex slaves and the boys were killed in front of their parents. Not trying to glorify westerners but you sure as hell are glorifying the Persians.

Used to wonder why they stopped this series. But then I realized that most of it is wrong because they think all revisionist history is solid proof instead of one of many interpetations of our past. They always choose the anti west and anti empire ones.

This video is full of bias, lies and misinformation.
Life under the athenians wasn't so awesome particularly if you were a woman or a slave" I gotta disagree with the second one; as Pseudo-Xenophon said:
"Now among the slaves and metics at Athens there is the greatest uncontrolled wantonness; you can't hit them there, and a slave will not stand aside for you. I shall point out why this is their native practice: if it were customary for a slave (or metic or freedman) to be struck by one who is free, you would often hit an Athenian citizen by mistake on the assumption that he was a slave. For the people there are no better dressed than the slaves and metics, nor are they any more handsome. If anyone is also startled by the fact that they let the slaves live luxuriously there and some of them sumptuously, it would be clear that even this they do for a reason. For where there is a naval power, it is necessary from financial considerations to be slaves to the slaves in order to take a portion of their earnings, and it is then necessary to let them go free."
Moreover, we have various examples of slaves such as Pasion who rose to a high status and successfully undertook economical initiatives. The life of the average athenian slave wouldn't have been so different from the life of the average persian peasant.
Not to mention that Persia DID allow its subject to retain slavery, and various ancient sources confirm that. While slavery may have been banned in the core of the empire, the original persian territory, it is really doubtful that the persians totally eradicated it all through their enormous empire. Trying to ban slavery in territories which had an history of relying on it since thousands of years would have caused turmoil and revolts to say the least. And no sane-minded king would ever want that. The Cyrus Cylinder was probably a mere res gestae rather than a proper constitution as some hinted. Afterall, we have dozens of examples of slavery still going on under the rule of the achaenemids.
"the goverment was notoriosuly corrupt" And athenians could expell their leaders from the city whenever they proved to be inept leaders. Ostracism, never heard of that? Persians couldn't do it, and they had to wait for a conspiracy, an illness or a revolt to take care of an inept leader, whereas athenians could do it by simply writing his name on an ostrakos.
Not to mention the fact that athenians were able to openly criticize their leaders and their government, and even of accusing its memebers in the tribunal. Could you say the same for the subjects of the Shahanshah?
"imperialistic belief that might makes right" Athenians did not invent the concept. Thucydides simply wrote it down in his attempt to reconstruct the dialogue between the athenians envoys and the ones of Melos. Athens could act pretty brutally, and so? It's not like Persia did any better.
"there were a bunch of bloody wars with the persians" Which caused greek culture to spread and hellenistic age to flourish. In case someone forgot, hellenistic age resulted in great technological advancements (Antikythera mechanism, automata, Hero and Ctesibius'inventions, odometer, aeolipile just to name a few) and in greek culture influencing much of Persia, Levant; Middle east and even India for centuries.
I am not claiming that Athens was superior nor that Persia was inferior, as a matter of fact i admire both the hellenic and persian civilization and their contributions to the world. I just hate when certain people (such as the buffoon in this video) distort history to suit their anti-west propaganda agenda.

Boring class couldn't finish watching it.

Maybe if I was a self hating terrorist apologist who had a severe case of ADHD this video would be watchable.
-
"Persian empire was pretty dreamy", said as drawing of men tied up and shackled in line in background. Because they ruled lightly. This guy exemplifies why America has been in decline.

Where can I find the art that is used in this video?

Hey professor,
Before spewing nonsense about history, diminish the notion of your guesswork by spelling and pronouncing the simplest of Greek terms properly, as well as placing Athens, THE CAPITAL OF GREECE!!!, the very subject of your study, in the proper location on the map. I guess we should just trust you didn't blunder in any other details of your content, huh? -
Exactly. Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentations of their women. :)
-
Please do more research before making a video, Athens is way off from where you've put it. (5:12)
