vue - The Sci Guys: Science at Home - SE2 - EP3: Homemade Petri Dish - Growing Bacteria at Home
Welcome to the third episode of season 2 of The Sci Guys. In this episode we will be investigating how to make a homemade petri dish and how to mix together a culture medium that will encourage bacteria growth. We will show you how you can explore bacteria growth and petri dishes at home with a bunch of simple household items and at the end you will have a homemade petri dish that any bacterium will want to call home. why petri dish and not Agar.io
-
I have a question. why does it have some color red in my petri dish?
-
Their pronounced "pet-ree-dish" not "Pete-ree-dish"
-
Wath temperature?

This will be perfect for my STEM students studying Cells & Microorganisms

i know this is a little late and you might not respond but im doing this for science fair and i dont know how do dispose of used petri dishes

I have a container of gelatin and cubes of bouillon. Could you please specify the amount of each? I don't know how to measure a "packet". Thanks and great video.

The blue stuff actually looks more like mold, specifically penicillium.

I am sorry to inform you but this is not the best method of achieving bacterial growth. Gelatin isn't suitable for this because most bacteria metabolize it making your media a liquid. In addition the sugar(sucrose) and beef bouillon(nitrates and preferably peptone) isn't really enough and will mostly grow fungus, as showed in the video. If you look closely the growth looks a bit 'fuzzy', this is you first indicator of fungal growth. However from the swabs of your mouth are slightly worrying, normal cultures only contain small colonies of normal flora, so I'm guessing it might be contamination. I really mean no offence just wanted to inform you that you should maybe do another one of these just using agar and maybe a bit more of an aseptic technique plus having a control plate to see if you batch was perhaps contaminated. Otherwise great job on the video, your presentation as well as the presentation and animations were on point.

Hey anyone know how I could test whether pH has effect of the growth of bacteria.
-
what is the function of beef bouillon? Does it provide Nitrogen for bacteria to make proteins? Or it has another function.
-
Hi! loved the video. can these be used to culture yeast colonies?
-
Where can y get beef boluim

My daughter is doing this for her science fair. She swabbed the garage door knob, dad's iphone, dad's steering wheel, the microwave buttons, the tv remote and her tablet. The door knob grew staphylococcus aureus. Waiting on the rest to grow....

I have a question is this the same kind of petri dish that you would want to make if you are looking for fungus or mold
-
Just a simple question, does anybody know if I have to sterilize my cotton swabs? I'm trying to make my experiment as controlled as possible. Also, I'm using sodium free chicken bouillon, will that work?
-
Whenever I do this my Petri dishes always kinda turn into a liquid where the bacteria is growing and it never works out. Can you please help
-
Can i use chicken instead of bouillon

Hi, We have glass petri dishes, and were wondering how to dispose of the bacteria and clean them so we can use them again. Thanks
