Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania is an institution that USAID helped to create in the early 1960's and continues to partner with through the U.S. Government's Feed the Future Initiative. Agricultural development is a central part of improving health and nutrition as well as reducing poverty. In Tanzania, agriculture is the main driver of the economy, accounting for over 25 percent of GDP and 75 percent of the labor force. Poverty and food insecurity are the main drivers of chronic undernutrition in Tanzania, which currently affects forty percent of children under five nationwide. Sokoline University is an example of how USAID strengthens local institutions and capacity so that aid recipients can become more self sufficient.
