vue - War and Civilization: Crash Course World History 205
In which John Green investigates war, and what exactly it may or may not be good for. Was war a result of human beings organizing into larger and more complex agricultural social orders, or did war maybe create agriculture and "civilization?" It's hard to know for sure, but it's sure fun to think about. and "no modern empires"? I would postulate America is an empire in much the same way Athens used trade pacts to effectively control multiple territories. not only does the US do this the govt has also waged constant war. The US has been at war for most of its history

USA's insane politicians love making war for the profit of bankers and the Military Industrial Complex. Resources and control over populations as the motive. Or maybe they hate people...

That moment that this is 2 years ago and a war is closing in Europe and Europe will be a new frontline again! Because war is not only because of resources. This war will become the war of system! Is the Islamic Sharia better for the world or is the Western Modern system better for the world?

Can you make a movie?

It's interesting how you talk about modern countries avoiding wars bc it's beneficial for trade. This seems exceptionally true when you think about our recent military targets and how we have basically no trade incentives to keep us civil
-
International trade seems like an incomplete argument for less war. I would argue more in favor of the massive system of international diplomatic, military, and political checks and balances.

with over 800 bases around the world id dare say America is the empire not Russia
-
If it's beneficial to not go to war why has the US been perpetually at war for decades?

'The problem with mercenaries,' said the Patrician, 'is that they need to be paid to start fighting. And, unless you are very lucky, you end up paying them even more to stop.' - Vetinari, Jingo.

I've recently heard an interesting argument for America to become and actual empire. I am an American and a nationalist so I am biased, but I am not in favor of empire building. The argument was interesting because ISIS and similar rebel groups would not have gained power if the US colonized Iraq and Afghanistan. Iraq and Afghanistan would benefit from American style infrastructure and tying into the US market. I am not for US colonies in the Middle East, I think that it would send a bad image to the world, and the native peoples in colonies just have a history of being oppressed by the colonizers. I would like to think the US is better than that, that we wouldn't oppress those people, but history isn't on our side, and I think that Britain didn't colonize thinking it would oppress the natives but it did. Interesting argument for argument's sake though, and I would be willing to hear it fleshed out a little more and have some details of the pros and cons analyzed.

Agriculture was the beginning of War. You got it backwards a little bit.

I don't quite understand... democracies go to war almost all the time and commit conquests more then anyone else. That's why I feel it's in our nature... especially us in the US more so then Russia. I think that's a good thing for our society and is what's propelled us and the world into where we are today!
