And a water crisis is affecting the cultivation of roses in Pushkar, India. Rose farmers and businesses are being hit hard and finding it hard to make a living. Rose farmers and businesses are badly affected by the water crisis in Pushkar. Over the past two years the ground water level in the region has dipped five times, from 50 feet to almost 300 feet, due to the absence of rain. [Subhash, Rose Grower]: "The farming is being adversely affected. The plants are drying. The plants are not setting properly for the roses to grow. There is a lot of problem due to water." The manufacturing units, which were busy before, are suffering losses due to the lack of raw material. [Navratan Jain, Rose Processing Unit Owner]: "The market is declining. There is a lot of trouble caused by water shortage. No chances of the condition becoming better can be seen." The sharp decline in the production of roses has become a matter of concern as farmers and manufacturers are facing losses. [Premdas, Spokesperson, Rose Growers Association]: "If the rains are good this year, the crop may be good. But if it remains like last year, by January-February the crop will be bad. The plants are drying in the fields." The farmers want the government to create an irrigation policy catering to the needs of the farmers in the area. Pushkar is known for its indigenous varieties of roses, with 80 percent of its land used for rose cultivation. It is one of the highest producers of roses, rose-based products, rose water and dried rose petals. The roses and rose products from Pushkar are sent to various parts of the country and abroad.
