vue - Watering Phalaenopsis orchids with ice cubes - Settling the matter Part 2
Missed Part 1? watch it here https://youtu.be/CLoSPdOWu2g 2. Just Add Ice shows me a tutorial on watering and we understand from this that we need to place ice on the crowns of Phalaenopsis orchids, see here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9p2tdV2XOQ The Orchid societies warn that water left standing in the crown can cause rotting of the tissue, damaging the plant to a massive extent. Learn more about it here http://staugorchidsociety.org/PDF/PhalaenopsisWhatCanGoWrongbySueBottom.pdf Another Orchid Society warns about the same thing http://oregonorchidsociety.org/cultivation/orchid-pests-disease/fungal-problems Us collectors have experienced this crown rot, here is what we went through: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DL0NKFF6Bj8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSod1YaCAnk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6tm65p29tk Why would Just Add Ice advise me to perform such a dangerous technique without warning me about this possibility? 3. Just Add Ice says that Phalaenopsis orchids go through dormancy, this is shown by the limpy leaves, loss of color and luster, see it here http://www.justaddiceorchids.com/Just-Add-Ice-Orchid-Blog/bid/81354/Don-t-Throw-Out-Your-Orchid-It-s-Not-Dead After this it will somehow return to normal and bloom. The American Orchid Society describes loss of leaf perkiness and leathery appearance as dehydration, check it out here https://www.aos.org/Default.aspx?id=89 Also on dehydration they say this https://www.aos.org/Default.aspx?id=529 Collectors here on youtube seem to agree with the orchid societies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddc8VntVxMc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEo7smJROtw It would appear the cause of dehydration is a loss of root system more often than not. About the dormancy, the AOS never said anything about it in its basic care guide https://www.aos.org/Default.aspx?id=217 More over they say these orchids have no dormancy https://www.aos.org/images/img_content/newsletter_issues/may11.html 4. Just Add Ice orchids never mentions cold damage on orchids. An orchid society claims that Phalaenopsis don't encounter ice in their habitat http://oregonorchidsociety.org/ice-cubes-and-orchids The AOS talks about cold damage https://www.aos.org/Default.aspx?id=123 Here is cold damage on leaves http://staugorchidsociety.org/culturepests-environmental.htm Collectors seem to have had cold damage happen to their orchids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMxPXWgkRAI The Oregon Orchid Society advises me to NOT use ice at all http://oregonorchidsociety.org/top-ten-orchid-growing-tips Overall, Just Add Ice, why do these people show me all these horrible things that can happen due to your advice? How would you fertilise? Freeze the fertiliser into ice cubes? That would just be dangerous because someone might use it in their drinks and get poisoned. Using ice just creates more work, and they really should not be advising putting the ice on the crown of the plant - that is just laughable.

I follow you everyday for your intelligent and sound advice. I believe the "ice cube thing" wants to present orchid culture as easy for beginners... when we all realize eventually that to have success with our orchids, we must read a lot, research a lot, find good advice from different sources and apply what we learn to OUR own growing environment. I'm very happy to have found your channel, as well as others such as Brad's and Roger Frampton's, where we get to see firsthand experience from orchids lovers everywhere ! Keep up the good work, have fun in your new greenhouse, hope all the loose ends come together real soon.

Oh I almost forgot. I'm thinking about starting my own channel. On growing plants that you and your viewers mite like. No am not trying to take viewers from you. I'm just hopping by telling people about it. That I will actually do it lol.

Wow this is old. But I must say thank you. I don't often rave about how good a video is. But this time I must. I'll sub, I'll like it and I'll share with friends. You hit all of my pet peeves. Like cutting the spike to try and make it rebloom. I decided don't care if it blooms again or not. So I don't cut. And yea know what. Most of the time they do bloom again. So I think and this is just my opinion based on my luck with my plants. So if you try it and it don't work as well for you am sorry. But I think cutting the spike don't encourage it to rebloom but biscourages it by sending the plant into shock. Having said that. I think there is more to it then just to cut or not cut. Like my lighting feeding how I water. And so on. But my orchids rebloom more often then not bye not cutting the spike.

Hi Danny,
I love your work.
Can you tell where I buy abrassavolla cucullata or any kind of brassavola in Romania?
Thanks . -
Hi Danni , firstable let me say , I was a victim of both this ice thing, and the confusion over the term "overwatering" 🙁😡 , I killed one to many of my orchids , before I started doing the reasearch, and most importantly, finding you !! Thank you thank you . Now my point , I agree with you 100 percent with the ice thing , such a shame, because the orchids themselves I purchased with the ice label , we're beautiful 😢. The overwatering confusion , I think comes with the vast difference between your common house plants , and orchids . Generally speaking, common house plants are watered frequently , but not generously . Normally we water them when the top soil is dry , and " over watering " is a Nono, that means don't soak the soil ! When it comes to orchids , again generally speaking , we tend to water less frequently ( you know best 😊), but when we do, we water generously . I think the main reasons , is because of the vast different between the two plant mediums , that is potting soil and orchid medium . I wish I knew all of this before killing endless plants ☹️. I do love plants off all kinds , and especially orchids ! Ok , hope this helps . And thank you again, your the best !

My gut says it would be a very bad idea to use ice in any way, shape or form on a TROPICAL plant.

OMG, do I not know about putting ice near the crown. DO NOT DO THAT. My poor orchid. It was just starting to turn around when I was rehabbing it from placing ice in the pot and then....it got crown rot followed by root rot...and it died. cries

+Shonna Lee Leonard Thank you Shonna :) well I was thinking that there might be people who really don't care if the orchid lives or not so, maybe that is their target. In any case I know many people doing this and killing their orchid and then regretting, so if I manage to help them I'm happy :)

Excellent, excellent, FINALLY the case against adding ice is thoroughly explored and set to rest once and for all. Common sense would tell me that this company is simply trying to sell to people who are too lazy to simply run water through the orchid medium. And, when they kill it with ice, as they surely will, many will run back out and buy another. Win win for the company! High sales and repeat sales add up to big dollars. Very well said Danny! If only people would use common sense, there would not be so many "Just add ice" orchids in the compost heap! I cannot imagine adding a single drop of freezing cold water to my orchids, or any living plant. You & Brad are my favourite on here, and I LOVE your videos!!! Keep up the fantastic work you two!! :)

Yikes! I can't believe people, and professional growers, would actually give this advice! I've been growing orchids for more than 25 years, and I would NEVER DREAM of watering a plant this way. These plants come from the tropics where there is NO ICE naturally occurring, so why would you do this? It's so wrong. Someone explained to me that it's easier to water this way because you just put the ice on the plant, and leave it to melt. Horrifying! If someone is too lazy to take the time to water their plants, then they shouldn't keep them.

They only want you to buy more and more Orchids, and that is why they tell you to give them icecubes cause the Plant will slowly die and some people will only think that a Orchid will naturaly not live any longer than this. It is such a shame. Most of my Orchids are saved ones and i always feel sad for misstreated Orchids.

I have had my phalanopsis since February, it was a birthday present, and I made it a personal goal to if I could keep her alive for a year I'd start more gardening. I didn't know much about taking care of orchids and my aunt, who loves orchids and usually has one every year, told me to keep her "wet". ( I learned quickly this is not the case.) I asked some coworkers for advice, they work in the garden department, and one kept telling me not to repot until she finishes blooming, and another kept telling me to put three ice cubes on the media every ten days. my thinking was three ice cubes won't fit in my pot and the leaves would be in constant touch with the ice, since she's in a small pot and produces fairly large leaves. three weeks ago I notices black spots on the blooms and the leaves, and my research lead me to cutting of the areas with the black spots and put cinnamon on the would. I did. A week later I saw that leaves had started to grow out of one of the spikes, I didn't know this was normal and I just left them alone. now this week I finally repotted her when she wasn't showing signs of producing more blooms, and noticed that 80% of the roots where gone, just dead and papery, so I cut those off, but the rest of the roots that are still green have black spots in random areas. I know I was watering too often because I would water when the top layer of media was dry, which she was in moss from the store. Now that I repotted her in a bark, charcoal mix I got from a nursery in my area. I'm hoping she will do a lot better.

Some people are open minded, they can absorb information and can learn thru other peoples mistakes, it can save you time and gives you a better sense of things. Others will always think they are the sole source of truth, unfortunately these people only learn by making their on mistakes, and there is nothing we can do to change their minds, they will struggle and fall many times before getting right.
You, as other youtubers, and other people too, helped me alot and I appreciate this, continue with the great job. -
Great reasoning here! I think the reason the "just add ice" orchids gained popularity is all the non-plant owners wanted to hear that there was a lazy person's way to care for orchids. It's all just marketing...novelties. Thanks for posting this series of videos!

I'm against the ice watering. Yet my orchids bloom twice a year. There is no such thing as dormant season. Mine is always lush. Yet the old lady that always did it killed them every year and still stick with that method. Sad!

Thanks for the shout out Danny and thanks for your thorough research into this matter. It takes a lot of time and effort to compile your information and your viewers and I appreciate this. Keep up the great work. You're amazing! :)))

If the viewer thinks it's okay to water with ice cubes, he must be the one buying the blue, green and red colored phals!
