The produce is nearly double than last year, and farmers hope for government support in selling the produce. Wheat farmers reaped a bumper crop this year in India's Gujarat state—nearly double the produce last year. According to officials, the wheat produce is estimated at six million tons. [Narendra Popat, Rajkot Agricultural Produces Marketing Yard]: "Five years ago, the situation was that we imported wheat from Madhya Pradesh. Now with the grace of nature, Gujarat will have almost six million tons of produce. And Saurashtra always has good quality produce. And in India, Saurashtra's produce arrives first, a month before other states." Corporate giants like ITC and Cargill are approaching farmers to buy the produce. However, farmers are waiting for state owned Food Corporation of India to declare support prices for purchase wheat directly from farmers. [Pravin Aandani, Trader]: "This time the produce is very good and in huge quantities. If the Food Corporation of India cooperates then sales will occur, otherwise there will be no sale." The farmers in the Saurashtra region, located on the Arabian Sea coast of Gujarat state, are hoping for higher per quintal price compared to the last year's price.
